January 5th: Columns in Greece?
I just knew I couldn't go to Greece and write about architecture without touching on the topic of columns. The Grecians are famous for their invention of three types of columns: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. Doric columns are the most simple and noble columns of them all, lacking any embellishment. They can be see on the outside of the Parthenon and on may other temples. The type of column we saw the least of had to be the Ionic order. These are decorated with a type of curly Q "capitals" at the top which hold up the frieze and other layers and are typically more slender than Doric style columns. Lastly, Corinthian columns, deriving from the city of Corinth, are the most ornate columns. Corinthian order is noted by its elaborate capitals decorated in acanthus leaves and scrolls. This can be seen in the first picture on the far left. Hopefully, this is a successful overview of the three classical orders of Greece though I could write you a novel or two!
