Since I am putting my journal together at the conclusion of this trip, I thought it would only be right to include several entries focused on Grecian architecture as a whole. Overall, I noticed two critical points that could be found all over modern Greece: baloncies and rooftop gardens. Not that we do not have these things in the United States, but here in Greece they are features of every hotel and building. These tell us a lot about Greek culture. First off, since the climate gets so hot during the summertime, balconies and rooftop gardens are the perfect place to cool off. Secondly, since Greece has been modernized into towns set amongst mountains with little outside area to breath, the balconies allow for fresh air even in the most densely populated cities such as Athens. After building out into the countryside so much, many towns were required to build up and what better way to still stay connected to the outdoors than to build a balcony! I can imagine living here and looking out upon the tiny, winding roads of Kalambaka on a slow Thursday afternoon before a nap. Aah.
